aka Nessie/Ness

The Will to Belong
Some rescues arrive with physical wounds, but Nessie arrived with a spirit that had been pushed to the absolute brink. She was part of a harrowing rescue extraction involving several adult dogs who had been used for breeding. In a display of profound cruelty, the puppies were not being sold; they were simply being thrown into the veld to die. Nessie wasn't just a survivor of neglect; she was a witness to the callous disposal of her own kind.
When she first arrived, Nessie was a "ghost" in a defensive shell. She could not tolerate human touch, reacted with terrified, frothing aggression toward other animals, and scavenged anything she could find—edible or not. Her walls weren't just high; they were reinforced by a deep-seated lack of safety and the trauma of her past.
A Breathtaking Internal Drive
What makes Nessie’s story so remarkable is her own agency in her healing. While I provided the safe container, Nessie provided the courage. She possessed a fierce, internal "will to belong" that saw her systematically dismantle her own defenses.
Today, Nessie’s transformation is a testament to the resilience of the sentient spirit:
Trust Reclaimed: From fleeing touch to seeking out cuddles with visitors, she has redefined her world as a safe space.
The Power of the Pack: She has formed inseparable bonds with her fellow rescues, Gem and Enchantment, proving that even the most fractured hearts can find harmony.
Confidence & Direction: In the busy environment of the sanctuary, Nessie has moved from fear to fluency. When she is unsure, she no longer reacts with panic; she simply looks to me for guidance—a level of trust that is a gift to witness.
Nessie is part of my own pack and as such has a lifelong home. She has moved from being a tool for breeding to being a cherished member of a family. To watch a dog move from the trauma she had to endure to navigating life with such poise and confidence is one of the greatest honors of my career. I have an immense amount of respect for this little girl; she didn't just heal—she conquered.
