Griffin

Our proper pavement special. He came into my life when I really needed something to focus my effort on. One morning while checking water pipes and pumps my Daxie ran to an old dam on the property, barking and moaning at something.

It had been a very rainy season and wet. By that time, it had been raining for days on end. I walked over expecting to see a snake or wild goose that normally enjoys the dam and has water during the rainy season.

When I got to the edge this fluffy, wet, and neglected little dog was staring up at me. He had lost an eye; his back was hurt, and he was taking refuge under a turned-over container we had put there for the wild birds to nest in. I immediately ran back home to go and find help.

Once back, I waded knee-deep in mud to make my way over to him with a blanket as we didn’t know how he would react to humans. He was feisty and scared and tried to run, when he couldn’t run anymore, he turned to growl and lunge wanting to protect himself. Eventually, I got the blanket over him and got him picked up. He was biting me through the blanket and was very stressed. We brought him inside and tried to calm him down so we could assess him for injuries.

As soon as he got a bowl of food, he ate it within seconds, and at that moment he realized he was safe and started to relax. We took him to the vet, he had Biliary from all the ticks he had, no one can say how he lost his eye, his back has problems and he walks strenuously. He was treated for everything and we decided we would keep him.

He turned into such a sweet dog. Whilst still a little grumpy, he has learned to start trusting humans and now spends his days on a warm bed enjoying every moment he can. He loves cuddles and he is my shadow, never far from where I am. He has taught me so much about resilience, that no matter what you go through in life, you are always capable of love and compassion instead of anger and resentment.
