Fred & Frida

Updated: Jan 27

Fred Frida

The two dogs that stole my heart from a picture of them I saw waiting in kennels for a new home. They got handed a raw deal when their elderly owner passed, they were surrendered. Being scared and unsure after being placed in kennels, people feared them. Especially Fred who had a booming voice and was also noticeably big in stature.

They did not make for a very adoptable pair of dogs at that point. I fetched them from the kennels to see if I would be able to rehabilitate them for adoption. To my surprise, these were the most loving souls. We connected immediately; they felt safe, and I loved seeing how they just melted into my embrace.

The rest, as they say, was history. I could not see them moving and being disrupted again. They became mine immediately. Frida became my unicorn-hound, and the matriarch of my pack. Our bond ran deep, and she knew my soul inside and out. She was never far from me when I was at home, and she was always waiting by the gate when I went go to town. She would sit by the gate in rain, sleet and snow until she saw her mom’s car. That excited expression on her face made me rush to get home every single time.

Our mammoth of a boy Fred succumbed to liver failure on 30 June 2025 and left a massive empty space. Frida was at that stage already battling cancer and she crossed the rainbow bridge on 24 September 2026.

You guys were an amazing pair of dogs that we had the honor of knowing, loving and caring for. Although the pain still lingers you deserve to run free abound with joy.
