The Boy Called Brave-Heart

The world of senior rescue and palliative care, loss is a constant, quiet companion. We provide a soft landing for the oldies, but that means our narrative is often written in final goodbyes. In this cycle of endings, Bravey was my unexpected, life-altering "hello."

He arrived at SA Basset Adoptions with his mother and littermates, a tiny scrap of a boy who possessed a wisdom far beyond his weeks. At the time, my personal pack was comprised only of seniors; I had never dreamed of raising a puppy again.

But Bravey didn't ask for permission—he simply arrived as magic in Basset form, and his spirit enveloped me completely.

I put him to the test, watching him navigate the complex social dynamics of my older dogs and the fragile rescues in my care. Nothing stumped him. He moved through the world with a "social savvy" that took my breath away—showing a tender, quiet respect for the sick and sore, yet keeping a wild, joyful heart for the young. He has this incredible, rare ability to build deep bonds, and yet, when we lose a resident, he recovers with a grace that helps me do the same.

Bravey is more than a pet; he is my solace. He is the professional welcoming committee for every nervous newcomer and the steady hand that tempers aggression in others. But when the "work" is done, he plays with the abandon of a monster, knowing he is safe, loved, and utterly adored.

Bravey, you are my oxygen when the air gets thin and the work gets heavy. I am so proud of the young man you have become, and I feel profoundly blessed that you chose me to be your person.
