Sam

aka Sampie/Sampioen/Sammy

The Gentle Guardian of Besida

Sam (or Sampioen, as he’s affectionately known) is the dignified patriarch of the pack. A nearly 10-year-old German Shepherd and brother to Dean, Sam embodies a quiet, steady strength that anchors our home.

The Face of Patience

If you looked up the word "patience" in a dictionary, you would find Sam’s picture right there. Despite managing hip dysplasia and fading eyesight, his spirit remains as sweet as ever. He is the ultimate "big brother" to our fosters; his patience with the influx of rescue dogs is legendary. He allows the newcomers to find their feet, offering a calm, protective presence that makes every foster feel safe.

A Man of Few Words (Except for Howling!)

Sam is an introvert by nature. He isn’t one for grand, flashy displays of affection, but his love is found in the quiet moments. There is nothing quite like the "weird little GSD chortling" he does in the morning—his special way of saying he’s happy to see you.

However, even the most introverted Shepherd can’t resist a good sing-along! When the Bassets decide it’s "howling time," Sam throws his head back and joins in with a monstrous howl, happily "whooo-hooo-ing" away with the rest of the pack, whether there’s a reason for the noise or not.

A Loyal Soul in a Unique Coat

Sam is most often found chilling in a quiet corner, away from the hustle and bustle. He is a sensitive, loyal, and incredibly obedient boy who lives to please. You never have to raise your voice with Sam; he listens with his heart and always tries to deliver exactly what is needed.

With his striking grey coat—a beautiful and unique variation of the traditional GSD colors—Sam is a stunning sight to behold. He is a true joy, a "Sampioen" in every sense of the word, and we are so lucky to have his wise old soul watching over us.
