Gem’s mom was part of quite a few dogs that had to be extracted from a nasty backyard breeding situation; the irony was that puppies were not being sold, but just being left in the field to die. The dogs were mistreated, underfed, and mostly terrified.

When Gem’s mom arrived that night, she was heavily pregnant, but we did not realise that she would be giving birth shortly after she arrived that same night. She absolutely did not want to be near other dogs, ripped my hand open when I was trying to get her into a safe room, and was absolutely wild.

Gem was one of those puppies who were born that night. This girl is extremely high-strung, fearful of most things in life, and like her mom, she has never shown an affinity for humans or animals. Gemmie has been a real challenge, yet through the course of her life, she has made two best friends, Enchantment and Pureness (who was part of the same rescue extraction), and even though she is extremely picky about it, she has found some humans that she adores.

Being part of a life where other rescue doggies and animals are a consistent occurrence, she has broadened her skill set and pushed herself to keep growing. She is a loyal companion and gives love in abundance to those that she cares about. I respect the fact that this girl is able to adapt to situations, able to give love, and grow, even if it doesn’t come naturally to her. You are an inspiration to me, little girl!
